When Jackie asked me to marry him nearly nine years ago, he knew I came with a side kick, Poppy my then four-year old Shih Tzu Jackie knew that many things were negotiable with me, however Poppy was not one of them. No Poppy, no Tracy! Thankfully he loved Poppy from the beginning and he has carried him into bed every night since we moved in with him. About four years ago I started to think about adding another “baby” to the family. Poppy was starting to get older and I thought perhaps a puppy would not only keep him company, but keep him feeling a bit younger.

I broached the subject with Jackie and let’s just say he was not on board with the idea. He had at least one hundred reasons why getting a puppy was not in the best interest of family harmony. I knew that I had a very challenging mission ahead of me, but I would not be discouraged and was confident that I would prevail. Turns out it took me much longer to wear the old fellow down than I anticipated and he proved a formidable opponent. Finally in mid November 2014 Jackie could take the pressure no longer and he agreed that adding a new Shih Tzu baby was in fact an excellent idea! Was I ever glad because I had talked about it for so long, I was tired of hearing about it my self and I didn’t know how much longer my voice would hold out. Not wanting to risk Jackie changing his mind, I wasted no time getting to work on locating just the right puppy.

Living in the small rural area we do, it is not easy to find many things, Shih Tzu puppies being one of them, so I did a Google search on any surrounding area that I could think of. Every time I had a lead, the puppies were either not born yet, already gone or one of the new fangled designer breeds. This went on for several weeks. Then we decided if we had any hope of finding a puppy we would need to expanded our search and as soon as we did a family with puppies for sale that had just become available came up. We had been disappointed so many times we were very tentative when we pulled up the web page. They had five puppies for sale and each had an individual picture which captured their personalities. We looked at the first, the second, the third, the fourth and we had no idea how we would choose. And then we pulled up the picture of the fifth puppy. I looked at Jackie who was grinning ear to ear and we said at the same time, “That’s the one”! We both just knew.

Immediately Jackie called the listed phone number and none of the puppies had yet been spoken for. The owner explained that he would hold the puppy for us, but only after he received a deposit, which was understandable given the fact that he didn’t know us from Adam. Since I handle all the finances Jackie handed me the phone, and all I remember saying is, “We want this puppy, tell me where send the money and we will pay for him in full”. I was instructed to set up a Pay Pal account, something we had never before done and by that evening he had his money and we had a reserved tag on Winston. Now the hard part which was waiting the three weeks until he was ready to leave his mom. I promise you that was the longest three weeks of my life.

Finally the morning of December 6, 2014 arrived and we were in the truck and on the road at 6:45 am. We met the breeder at 7:30 am and after exchanging pleasantries he went around to the other side of his van and pulled out the most adorable little puppy I have ever seen in my whole entire life. I actually carried on and squealed like a little school girl who had just gotten the doll of her dreams. The minute I picked that sweet little baby up he started kissing me and he has been kissing me ever since.

I cannot begin to tell you how much joy and happiness Winston has brought to our home and our lives. He is quite the little character and keeps us laughing. To be honest, Poppy was not real happy with us at first, and to tell you the truth he was downright miffed at us for a good six weeks. Eventually he did warm up to the little fella and actually started playing with him and has came to love his companionship. I had to wait much longer than I wanted to for Winston, but life is not about getting what we want when we want it. It’s about waiting for what God has planned for us in His timing, even the perfect puppy.

Until we meet here again, I pray God bless you and keep your loved ones safe.
