All Creatures Great And Small
This morning I was in the utility room putting in a load of laundry when I heard Jackie call me. i could tell by the tone of his voice that he was excited about something. So I quickly finished putting the clothes in the washer and hurried into the kitchen. Jackie was looking out the window over my desk down into the wooded area and told me to come look. He pointed out two dark spots amid the trees and white snow and asked if I could see them. I had to look for a moment but finally I spotted what he was seeing; two deer bedded resting in the snow. They were so beautiful and peaceful and I quickly went and got my phone to take a picture.
I kept an eye on the deer all morning, looking out the window every now and again as I did my household chores. I thought about the deer as well as all the other wild animals and pondered their ability to survive such brutal weather. It was 16 degrees when we first saw the deer and they were laying in the snow under the cover of the trees with very little sunlight on them. And yet they appeared to be comfortable.
The forage which they would normally eat lay beneath inches of snow and ice and was yet days away from being exposed, so they were seemingly without food. All sources of water had been frozen for much of the winter so how did they quench their thirst and get the water their bodies need? And yet somehow, despite the obvious physical hardships, these amazing animals survive.
I could ponder the matter all day and never be able to find the answers to all the questions I thought of, not in the physical sense anyway. Oh I know there are scientists every where that would think my awe and amazement at the fortitude of these animals quite silly. They would have a perfect text book explanation for every thought I had and yet I would still not believe them. The truth is this is not a scientific matter. It is a God matter. All creatures great and small, (including us humans), were created by God along with everything else here on planet earth. God built into them the ability to survive all weather extremes and imparted to them the knowledge required to thrive.
I find inspiration daily in the world outside the windows of my our little country home and more importantly I see God's hand. I will never be able to understand how people can look at the same things I look at and not see God. There is no way an explosion, a big bang if you will, could have created the world which I look upon. The beauty of what I see takes my breath and raises my awareness of how small I am and how great He is.
Until we meet here again, I pray God bless you and keep your loved ones safe.
PS: The picture above is the one I took this morning. Look closely and you will see both of them.
